Cam Chain Guide Separated was created by k1z947060
Hello,

I have a 1976 KZ400 and the cam chain guide (exhaust side/tensioner side) has separated. The plastic/vinyl black piece has come off of the alloy piece. Does anyone know of a suitable epoxy to adhesive these pieces back together?

Thank you,

1976 KZ400

In my cool rolled steel company we renew (glue) plastic/vinyl/rubber coatings on aluminum tachometers wheels with a two component glue. It is an oil resistant glue and could only removed on a lathe.
Give me some time for the investigations, i am at work tomorrow and ask for the glue manufacturer.

I have the same problem. Same bike too. Wonder if Kawasaki messed up the glue for that batch of bikes. Following

Thanks of the response guys. That glue you mentioned sounds promising. I was worried I was going to be immediately blasted for even considering this instead of replacing it.

The problem is with this cam chain guide I believe you have to pull the motor, split the cases, and take the crankshafts out! Hopefully we will get a solid solution for this.

Remove the old glue, rough up both parts, degrease both parts, glue and let it cure for 24 hours.

I would never put in old plastics, even less ones that has been repaired. Too much damage could be the result.

The part on mine isnt damaged. The glue just dried up. The other option is to crack the bottom case, and that sounds like a pain in the ass :(

In 78 I used a CB 450 cam chain adjuster rod because it was longer instead of replacing the guides and rollers. Bent valves, damaged pistons was the result after the cam chain broke. Wound up going 1015 because it was cheaper than OEM ones but STILL had to pay Full Ripping Retail for the rest of it and had to split the cases anyway. That was a hard $1000+ lesson. There's security in knowing what's going on between your legs.

I totally understand the risks involved. Apparently it mustve been a problem on the assembly line to have 2 similar z400 76s both with the same issue. I have a couple spare engines so I am ok if the glue doesnt hold. My buddy has a z1000, and had the same issue, he used some 2 part glue and has held ever since. Guess we can keep our fingers crossed, I do not wanna crack the bottom of this one, but if I do then Im gonna powder this damn engine :)
