22 Jan 2018 05:53 - 22 Jan 2018 05:53
i have a 1993 kz1000p and i am trying to put a .440 drag cam in. I have heard that you need to use the shim under. Can they be from a 1984 gpz750

Answer is YES!
You use the Buckets and the retainers from any Z650 - Z/GPZ 750, or GPZ1100 that is under bucket.

.440 lift cam is pretty big for normal street use. You will need to relieve the head on the thrust side of cam lobes too. Plus I don't know if the valve reliefs in stock pistons are deep enough for that big of a cam. Better check piston to valve clearance real carefully!! Heavy duty valve springs are a must with that big of a cam. I ran shim under buckets in all my KZ motors. With that much lift, they are a must!!!
Personally I would try something around .385 to .410 lift for a nice street cam.
Here is a early model head relieved for .450 lift cams.

A 440 lift cam will probably have a reduced base circle which requires special valve stem heights.
