KZ1000 clutch not engaging was created by DMack
Just picked up a 1980 KZ1000, and when i rode it home, the clutch (and everything else felt nice ans snappy).
A few hours later, i go to ride it, and my clutch doesn't feel like it's not engaging, resulting in it requiring high rpms to get the bike going.

I took it to a nearby shot, and the mechanic tightened the clutch cable all was right in the world.

Fast forward to a few hours later, and the problem is happening again.

Could the cable be slipping?

Change the motor oil and oil filter
Fill in oil for wet clutch engines = JASO MA2 Specification
JASO MA-2 is a specification aimed as higher friction oils suitable for bikes.

So you're saying that I should start with an oil change?
Also, probably a good idea to do a push rod adjustment, huh?

I use Rotilla 15/40. Try adjusting the cable at the sprocket cover.

If you do any adjusting at the engine, take note of all adjustment so in case of goofup can be returned to where it previously was. If clutch works fine riding home and later not, I would not go ape wild adjusting out a problem. Could be a bad cable, look for cable fraying at the lever, could be previous owner fooled with the cluth basket and didn't get the nut tight, and it is backing out. Could be many things, but do some checks before doing much adjusting.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Yeah. At one point it was feeling nice and snappy.
It’s feeling like the springs aren’t creating tension/friction on the plates, or possibly the Cable isn’t allowing the clutch to disengage the way it should.

Something is up with the disengage > engage mechanism.

The fact that - at one point today - we had it feeling right, and the it slipped back makes me think that’s the point of failure.
