Question,
I've been on some of the Kawasaki micro-fishe parts look ups and trying to see if there were any differences in exhaust on the Kawasaki 650 line up between 1977 and 1980 ,, I get conflicting info on the sites. . Were the KZ650's the same as the later SR650's, Custom's etc .. They all look similar.
Mine is a 77 KZ650B and has a MAC 4-2 system (to loud) however when I bought the bike the prev. owner included the factory pipes which look good, however in the left muffler a baffle inside must have come loose about mid-way down the pipe and moves back and forth when you tilt the exhaust (glad I learned this before I put this back on the bike the rattle would have driven me crazy) .
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks

They are not all the same. The KZ650 B, C, and F exhausts are one type; the KZ650 D and E exhausts are a second type; and the KZ650 H exhausts are a third type. Ed

I think the 650B/C/F models had the same muffler system. You can probably use the 650D/E mufflers, but you may have to fab simple muffler hangers in case the mounting points don't line up there. maybe not, though. The 650D SR header pipes are criss-crossed, which is kinda neat.

FYI. Any 650/750 exhaust headers should fit the cylinder head. air-cooled models.
I installed a 750E muffler system onto my 81 650. Here's the stock ZR750 4-1 mufflers on a 77 650.

.... note muffler recess. probably for axle nut clearance.

Wow,
Thanks you for the detailed info. There is a complete system (really nice) on e-bay for an 80 SR for $600 bucks , however thanks to this info I now see the differences , can't believe I did not spot that criss-cross!. Guess I will just be patient until a decent left side muffler for a B,C,F shows up somewhere. Currently most of the ones on e-bay are junk.
The MAC system on the bike looks great, just to loud and no optional baffles to quiet them down (probably would have liked it at 18).
Any other options? Really want to keep it stock as the rest of the bike is !

Your bike looks great! The paint on most of the red KZ650-B1 bikes faded very quickly; yours looks like new! I’m very glad to see you plan to keep it stock. There aren’t many stock ones left, but to me the stock ones always look the best. Ed

If the header pipes & manifold section are in good condition, you might be able to replace the mufflers.
Dunstall replicas, Emgo, Helix racing are few searches. I'm not sure what's available anymore.
They come in different styles & lengths and several different muffler tip shapes. megaphone. reverse cone. etc.
Places to check. Z1Enterprises. J&P Cycles. JC Whitney. eebbaayy. etc.

.... Verner-650's bike. has aftermarket mufflers, but I don't recall the brand.

The criss/cross exhaust are a "tuned exhaust." I had one on my Z1 with Jardine mufflers. Great system. If your baffles are removable, you may be able to add packing to deaden the sound.

Unfortunately the baffles on this MAC system are non removable,,,, I called MAC to see if there were any options,,,, nope.
So either I try and stake the floating baffle in the stock pipe somehow from the outside (doesn't sound like a good plan) or remain patient until I find a decent replacement on e-bay.
Thanks !

You might be able to cut or drill out the muffler end caps & remove the rusted out stuff inside, then install baffles & new muffler tips. If you do this, consider cleaning & painting the insides to treat & deter rust. rustoleum high heat ultra silver bar-b-que grill paint.

riverroad installed a glass-packed chrome muffler tip from amazon.com. 3A Racing 62-2356 Stainless Steel Bolt-On Exhaust Tip
He slid it inside the muffler can & I think he drilled a hole thru the muffler, then used a bolt to secure the thing. The auto parts store might have something similar. He had tried a tractor muffler from a farm supply, installed the same way, but it was too restrictive. There are various muffler baffles available on eebbaayy or at other places. vance & hines makes a bunch of different sizes. You'll have to measure your mufflers to see if there's anything that would work.
