So I was at Brands last weekend and all was well. I put a standard oil pump in, fitted a sump gate and swapped the mineral oil to semi synthetic. I reshimmed to average.009 and the engine was sweet all weekend. Thank you all for your help.
Still got a bit of an issue with the clutch though,I have to put it in 2nd gear and rock it back and forth with the clutch pulled in till it frees itself before I can start it on the rollers. I fitted it with EBC heavy duty plates and springs at the beginning of the season,do you think I should've gone with standard?

Sticky clutch after sitting overnight? Don't think I've ever had one that didn't.

Had a Barnett clutch for years and the plates would stick after longer than 2 days...... was a pain and nos plates solved that problem....... hope that was semi syn bike oil you switched too with a jaso rating for the clutch's sake.

Yep,semi synth Jaso rated. Ive had a bit of success adjusting the clutch at the lever when starting then backing it off but that's a pita not a fix.

Hi There
shim under 2 options 1 get parts off z650 try drop in with c/o valves and springs
buy shim under kit if still available
as for. Shim wear no idea may be bent cam worn and soft tips
I must admit I have found my 11:1 998cc race engine from same era difficult to set up carburettors primary circuits even with much later 34mm flat slides
although head porting in my head is aggressive and maybe yours is more reasonable
On my Z journey I have found cc’s are your friend and finally built a 1327 ported to match 34mm kein CR’s with a ‘fast road’ cam - great and even power delivery 130 HP at rear wheel
good luck with your head / cams and enjoy your Z-journey
