Something quite wrong if those shims are new.
Either the shims are faulty or that oil pump set up is restricting flow, especially the strainer holder on the end.
Is the sump pan modified too with a deeper recess at the back ?
That pump is more of a drag bike mod with the oil being pushed to the back during acceleration and may starve the pump on braking.
An oil pan gate would be more suited for circuit use and you should fit an oil pressure gauge to the oil gallery port near the ign housing for quick confirmation of pressure on start up.

I think you're right. I'll get an un modded pump and fit a gate. They look like 1/2 a door hinge, are they more special than that?

If you have a oil Oil starvation the sensitive parts (cam bearings) must be totally destroyed!!!
Your shims are the problem, use OEM parts

No! they are just a simple hinge.
Just make sure you fit in the right spot though.
New ones come with instructions on where to drill the mounting hole.
I drill 5mm and tap the sump M6 rather than just drill through 6mm.
That way you can screw and Loctite the bolt to the sump then fit the gate with a lock nut and washer for better security and the Loctited threads in the sump stop any chance of oil weeping past.

I'd fit a gauge now. This is the gate I made for mine.

Pump and new gasket ordered.
For the gate I've got a new hasp I never got round to using on my shed that I can modify, unless anyone else has a good example of something to use?

Is there any point in taking the head off,I can't check the oil galleries with it off anyway can I?

As this thread has been going on ,I'm now convinced it's this pump set up. Thinking about it,the last race I did was Anglesey and as some of you may know, the last few corners is a section called "the corkscrew",it's a downhill twisty section with a couple of short bursts of acceleration before the last corner onto the straight. That, along with my pump must have done the damage.

Has anyone got a picture of where to fit an oil pressure guage?

You can just drop the pan.
