Use the instructions in the Kawasaki Service Manual to check, and if necessary adjust, the bike's valve clearances. If you don't own the manual you really should buy one, but until then one that covers the 1982 KZ550-C3 (LTD) is available on KZRider at:

Possible obstruction in the fuel tank cap vent resulting in fuel starvation.

Test by riding with the fuel tank cap ajar (not snapped down), which assures ample venting through the partially open cap.

And of course assure fuel level is adequate before the test run.

Might also be crud suspended in the fuel that's accumulating around and obstructing the petcock pickup screens. If so, would remove, disassemble and clean the petcock and screens; and remove and flush the fuel tank using the fast dump method through the filler opening, add some fresh fuel or common household rubbing alcohol and re-dump. Repeat flushing until tank interior is free of any loose sediment or other type crud.

Good Fortune! :)

Tears and cracks in the ignition wiring can cause misfires, but are not time or temperature sensitive as you have described.
Valve clearances and fuel delivery are the most common culprits.
Performing ALL the routine maintenance as described in the factory service manual is the best way to eliminate and prevent a host of problems.
