Contemplating buying a 81 KZ1000 the seller claims has a 1075 kit. This was the story he got from the the guy he bought it from. The seller claims he did some checking with the area shops when he bought it, but none claimed to remember working on this bike.

The way I'm looking at it is, if there is no parts receipts, no machine shop work order...then it's a 998cc engine.

If it goes that far I may do a comp test to check for abnormal cyl. pressure, which could indicate presence of a aftermarket piston...which would make his story more plausible but....

It has a header and bigger carbs, but is there any way (short of tearing the engine down) to determine if this bike actually has a 1075 kit as the seller claims?

You could peer down one of the spark plug holes and see if it has a high domed piston.

Thank for the input. After contacting the seller regarding the impossibility of that bike having a "1075" kit, I suggested he do a comp. test or visually check for a domed piston. He did do a visual and reported back it had a domed piston (according to him and who knows what his level of mechanical experience is). Perhaps it does have a 1076 kit, which is what seems to be available for that series engine.

THis bike is about 120 miles away or I would verify this myself. I just don't want to spend 3 or 4 hours on the road only to find another seller BS story.

They do make a 72mm 1075 kit for J engines. Got the MTC kit in mine. Wiseco makes it also.

And if you see a dome through the plug hole it has a kit installed. I don't know of any aftermarket pistons for a standard bore.

If the piston top looks like this it's MTC. A lesser dome is most likely Wiseco.

Great information! I actually found a 1076 kit for the J engine, although I didn't tell the seller that...:) also some good tech info about the difference between these engines. aperaceparts.com/tech/techkz1000.html

I think that's a typo. Here are the piston kits and part number K1076 is the Wiseco 1075cc kit.
