Noise after starter clutch rebuild was created by renomueller
I had a starter clutch replaced and now the bike makes a noise in the lower unit. I was told by the dealer
that the starter clutch damper was destroyed and they went with the new damper. They say there are three(different sizes) so they went with the middle one. The noise sounds like a loose timing chain. Has anyone had a similar experience? The dealer says the damper just prevents the starter gear from free spinning after the starter is used. Thanks for any feedback......

Hi Reno mueller,
What bike? If it's a 900 there's a specific, detailed process stated in the manual to determine the correct damper thickness. If the dealer mechanic "guessed" at the size needed he has a one-in-three chance of being right.
The damper prevents the starter gear from wobbling in its crank roller bearing.
EDIT: thread already in progress:

The bike is a 1978 KZ1000, can you tell me if the damper is incorrect will it make a noise?

If it's too thick the starter could be ruined.
