KZ1100 valve adjustment question was created by 76KZ900
It's been a few years since I've done the valve adjustment on a KZ, but i seem to remember that one side either intake or exhaust was normally the side needing shims more than the other .. Of course I'll check them all but just wondering. Also who has shims best price now a days ?
Valve cover is out being chromed now and i wanted to get started on valves on my days off.
Thanks

As with all engines the exhaust valves have a harder life and are more prone to wear so you may find that those have tighter clearances.
When re-shimming try and get the figures towards the upper 0.15mm end of the scale if possible and never below the 0.10mm minimum.

I went to my local cycle shop for shims when i adjusted them on my 81' KZ1000. I think they darn near gave them away to me. Im sure there are cons to getting used shims but they worked for the job all the same.

Not saying I have not used the K&L Shims Jeff at Z1 sells, but I prefer using oem shims.
Those K&L shims were having QC issues not to long ago if I remember correctly.

Would that have been in the last year or so, and what was the main QC issue with them? I remember Z1E was having trouble getting shims in-stock a year or so ago...

The hard facing was coming apart. No maker marks on them so no telling where they came from.

If I remember it was 2 or 3 years back, some of the shims were not within production tolerances.

Got adjustment done. Had enough factory shims from previous bikes to get them. Two of my intakes were real tight.. One I could barely turn with my fingers so it was way too tight. Also heli coiled one valve cover bolt. Now as soon as valve cover gets back from chrome shop I'll be in business.
