Is this cam shaft done for? was created by Jekyll86
Hello gents,
I acquired a set of gpz750 cams on the interwebs yesterday. A bit of reading provided mixed reviews on installing used cams; some say finding a set of used gpz750 cams is the way to go and others say used cams are a poor decision all the way around. I found both in and ex cams for $40, so I jumped on it and figured I could decide later if I'll install them. I would love the collective opinion on the condition of the cams before i do anything with them (or return them).
The intake cam looks pretty good. My concern here is a small scuff on the #4 lobe that is barely noticeable with a fingernail run across it.
The ex cam doesn't appear serviceable. Lobe #3 has a 1mmx2mm nick and a 1mm-ish nick on the very edge of the lobe.
I'm bummed that the cams aren't as noted in the add, but the seller feedback was 99% and they were only $40, so I figured the gamble was worth the try.
Any thoughts on whether or not they should be used?

Doesn't look like they're worn past the hard facing. They may be useable with a little clean up.

Thanks swest. Now that I'm thinking through it, I think My main concern is whether or not it will damage the tappets.

As long as there are no high spots or the lobes are square, it should be good to go.

The tappet buckets are dime a dozen. No big deal other than you will have metal debris in the motor for the filter to clean up.
