What I have, 83 KZ1100 Engine Disassembled, the bike is set up for Chain drive using Suzuki Bandit 1200 swing arm and wheel and currently has a KZ1000 chain drive engine, Do I use the transmission from the 1000 or do I use the crank and top end from the 1100 in the 1000 cases? to build a chain drive 1100

Everything including the gearbox is better.
I presume the 1000 motor is the later ( no kickstart ) J type and will it accept the 1100 parts easily.
If the 1000 motor is the earlier kick start type then virtually no parts will interchange without modification .

Thanks Zed, yes the 1000 is a no kickstart engine. The 83 1100 is a twin shock bike, does this make a difference?

I'ts possible that I wasn't clear enough on what I have and am wanting to do. The project is based on an '83 KZ1100 shaft drive bike, (I'm still working out Kawasaki's model designations), think UMJ with shaft drive, the 1100 engine is apart, the bike currently has the non kickstart 1000 mocked up in it, out of these two engines, I want to build a chain drive 1100. Can I do this with what I have, or am I missing something?
Thanks Joe

Arn't you just a bright ray of sunshine... :silly: Frame is already converted using Suzuki Bandit 1200 swingarm and wheel, swingarm has had tabs added for the twin shocks, soo there won't be any shooting today. From the thread you posted, the way he went about it, it looks fairly easy as well...TexasKZ wrote: If you are proposing to convert a shaft drive frame to chain drive, you might as well shoot yourself now and be done with it.

Ah! ok. Should be a simple job of using the 1000 gearbox with the 1100 crank and top end in the 1000 cases.
1100 shafty used the J motor as a basis so should have the same 17mm pins and you MAY have a choice of cranks.
The later 1100 shaft also used the uni style twin swirl head but with shim on top retainers so you would want to use that as well if it is what you have.

These made around 120 hp whereas the others were around 100.
The 1100 shafty cams will be fairly mild similar to the 1000 ones but you can still get a strong motor with the parts you have if it's put together right with decent carbs and pipe.
