Crank case vent: How much smoking is ok/too much? was created by Jekyll86
I searched a couple threads on the crank case vent and haven't quite figured out the answer this specific question. How much is too much when it comes to crank case gasses/venting? I understand the case vent gasses are partly due to piston ring blow by, but I just did an 810 kit and things should still be good. Runs like a champ. Good compression dry with very little change wet.
The Bike: (what I think is applicable).
-kz700 - was hacked up pretty good when I bough it. Was stripped and frame was chopped, so It turned into a cafe.
-Installed an 810 kit three months ago.
-Gasses were not noticeable for about a month ago
-Recently closed off the large emissions ports on the head cover (vinyl tubing). Did not change reed valves or inner ports. (could this be part of the issue?)
- ran a bit lean for a while because a pilot jet was stripped and I couldn't remove it when I jetted the mains. Rejetted the carbs and plugs look great after doing a plug chop.
- Gasses are not noticeable until the bike warms up. gets worse while sitting in traffic.
- I currently do not have a tube on the vent port and it is running pods, so no airbox to dump gasses into.
The bike as it stands. Haven't updated in a while so here it is.
Here is a video of the case port. I just got home so the bike is warm. It was hard to capture on video, so I used a flashlight to shine through the gasses.
Any input on whether or not this is an alarming amount of gasses?

That seems a bit too much. Did you repla ce the old valve stem seals with new Viton seals?

Yeah, valve stem seals were replaced but I don't remember which ones they are. I have no exhaust smoke at all, regardless of engine temp.

I guess I should also state, It is barely noticeable unless there are lights shining through it, like sitting at a stop light in traffic or when I shine a flashlight through it.
is there any way the reed valves could be leaking into the engine case? I hope this is all it is, since the pistons and rings are brand new.

Well that's my entire list of alternate possibilities. Hopefully somebody else here has a less annoying possibility than rings.

P.S. I can't imagine the reed valves being the problem. Even if oil was getting into them, it would be sucked out the exhaust system.

Started in last month ?? Temperatures dropping as we get closer to winter ( Bad Word )
Once warmed up hot crankcase gasses hit cooler air causes visual cloud of water vapor ??
More water vapor created in crank case every time motor is shut off and allowed to cool which means more moisture collects in motor
in cooler weather so more water vapor boils out of vents as motor creeps up to operating temps
Just my take from 600 miles away

It doesn't appear to be water vapor. It doesn't appear to condense on my finger and I'm in Nashville. The temp today was 85ish. Unfortunately, I'm petty sure it's a light blue smoke.

Oil smoke will smell different from water vapor. Does it smell like oil burning?
(I could not watch the video.)

If attached to the factory air box, those fumes would simply be sucked through the carbs to burn off. Without a method to direct the fumes through the combustion chambers, you are stuck with it floating around the bike at idle.
I have a plan in-mind to direct those nauseous gases to each pod, through each burn and out the exhaust. In my case there is no oil residue escaping the breather cover, but the odor is obnoxious to breath while waiting for long traffic lights to say go. Not sure the idea will work, but I can't seem to shake it with reasons that it wouldn't. :S

Synthetic oil perhaps? That's a no-no when the rings are new.

Broken ringland, stuck rings and mismatched pistons, That's what caused my smoke.
