I ground off the old link with a Dremel tool. To rivet the new link I bolted a wooden block to the head and braced a small anvil against the gear holding the cam chain. Then I used a small ballpeen hammer to gently flare the rivet ends from the opposite side. You don't need to hit hard, just flare them enough to keep the plate in place.

Another long term update. After 25,000 miles on the new cam chain all is well. The old girl now has 113,000 miles on her.
