Is it worth getting a shim changing tool? If so, then does anyone have an opinion on which of these to get, i.e., is the more expensive one worth it?

BTW, This will be my first valve adjustment, ever. I am assuming that one of these tools will make the job more efficient and less complex due to not having to remove the cams.

Thanks,
-John

John,
Please add your bike's year and exact model to your signature line as it will help folks answer questions accurately. Depending on which model bike you have a shim tool may or may not be appropriate. Ed

If you have a small four they won't work. I like the first one but there's a danger of bending a valve if you turn the crank the wrong way.

For shim over bucket adjustment you can use a large zip tie instead of purchasing a tool. Lots of guys swear by this method over using the bucket depressing tools.

I have a KZ1000. Based on the block number, it is a '77a1. I believe this would be the shim over bucket, right?
Do I need to take the head off to use the zip tie method?
Also, I am using specs from an A2A manual, are they the same as the A1?
Thanks,
-John

I don't trust that method. Yes on the others. The factory style tool is the best.

No, you do not need to remove the head. Read about it here... members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/i...lve_tool_zip_tie.pdf

I have changed shims with the zip tie method. It's easy and cheap. Besides your normal shop tools, all you need is a big zip tie.

Zip tie works great, you do need to measure the shims you have to know what ones are needed to swap or switch out. Check all clearances first. R

The factory tool #T57001-113 is THE BEST, end of question. Its quick, easy, and works the best!!! Been using one since 1973 on Z's and KZ's. Just take the spark plugs out, and turn the motor over using the 17mm nut on the advancer side of motor. Just make sure you NEVER use the electric start to move the cams, or you will see your shim tool laying on your lift with part of the cylinder head still attached!!! There is no way you can tag a valve using that factory tool.

Years ago in a Kawasaki dealership, I watched some hot shot Z1 know it all mechanic rip a large chunk out of a Z1 head using the electric start with the shim tool. I had a hard time to keep from laughing in his face after watching that happen!!!!!

I made a tool from table knife with metal handle. It took about 20 min or so.
