BTW, This will be my first valve adjustment, ever. I am assuming that one of these tools will make the job more efficient and less complex due to not having to remove the cams.
Thanks,
-John

Please add your bike's year and exact model to your signature line as it will help folks answer questions accurately. Depending on which model bike you have a shim tool may or may not be appropriate. Ed

Do I need to take the head off to use the zip tie method?
Also, I am using specs from an A2A manual, are they the same as the A1?
Thanks,
-John

No, you do not need to remove the head. Read about it here... members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/i...lve_tool_zip_tie.pdf

The factory tool #T57001-113 is THE BEST, end of question. Its quick, easy, and works the best!!! Been using one since 1973 on Z's and KZ's. Just take the spark plugs out, and turn the motor over using the 17mm nut on the advancer side of motor. Just make sure you NEVER use the electric start to move the cams, or you will see your shim tool laying on your lift with part of the cylinder head still attached!!! There is no way you can tag a valve using that factory tool.swest wrote: I don't trust that method. Yes on the others. The factory style tool is the best.

Years ago in a Kawasaki dealership, I watched some hot shot Z1 know it all mechanic rip a large chunk out of a Z1 head using the electric start with the shim tool. I had a hard time to keep from laughing in his face after watching that happen!!!!!
