Mine is inside the engine. Your's might be on top of the case. I was thinking the spring might have broken keeping it locked on the drum.

If your model has the neutral finder, you should be able to shift from third to some other gear, but once you go down to first or neutral, it will be limited to those unless the output shaft is turning.

There's a bolt on my top case called a "shift drum positioning bolt" is that it? (fig. 20 in that diagram)

Can I remove this and take a look at the spring inside? Or will i be opening up a can of worms

There should be a thin washer you bend over to keep it from turning. Bend it down and remove the bolt. It should have the spring and in your case a pin. If they look OK and you still can't turn the drum, it's something else.

I didn't see one in your pic. If it's there you'll see it.

I can't find a washer, but when I started it up It's in 2nd gear but won't shift out. The shift lever just won't budge..
I'm hearing a knocking sound when i speed up or slow down. sounds like something big is loose. Maybe a broken shift fork?

Update!

I brought it to a shop because splitting the case was over my head :silly:
It took them a few days but they managed to 'finesse' the drum back to turning.
They said it was very unusual, so I don't know how much help this post will be for someone looking for answers to a similar problem, but everything is great now! Good weather here in Vancouver too!

Thanks for all the help.
