Do you ever check the oil level? I seriously doubt low oil level caused this, but it can cause catastrophic failures elsewhere.

The generator uses permanent magnets to make power and all the excessive power the generator makes that is not consumed by the bike will be shunted back to the stator by the R/R. The stator runs hot under normal conditions and when current is shunted back to the unit it runs hotter still, which can burn it up.

Best thing you can do for your charging system is make sure you have good electrical contacts throughout, and get a SERIES R/R. This type of R/R does not return excessive current to the stator, thus it helps protect it from overheating. Shindengen makes the SH775 for both OEM and aftermarket usage. Triumph speced the SH775 in a repair kit because their bikes were burning up too many stators. Best of all is that you can get one for cheaper than most junky made in China shunting R/R's. It's a win win situation.

Watch out for imitation-fakes Made in Chihina! If shopping on ebay, be sure to buy the regulator made by Shindengen with the model printed on the end of the unit. The Chihina units are virtually identical to look at, so watch out!

The stator does not need to be bathed in oil. The big motors (and twins) have oil in that area for the starter clutch, and some gets on the stator. The smaller fours are completely dry in there.

My buddy, who works on a lot of Hondas, is finding cheap knockoff stators from China showing up on some of the bikes he getting in. They burn up fast. We were just talking about this today while troubleshooting a CB750 charge system. (This one had a bad regulator, also from China.)
