If you have some old carb holders you can screw them to a piece of plywood, attach the carbs to them, clamp the plywood in a vice and level the carbs, and then do the clear tube thing. Ed

A properly functioning overflow circuit -- clean and unclogged -- would be expected to allow excess incoming fuel (for whatever reason) to escape through the overflow circuit before rising high enough to eventually enter the crankcase.

However, it takes only a single carb with a clogged overflow circuit to risk gasoline intrusion into the crankcase.

The overflow circuits may be tested with the float bowls removed and in hand. If desired, may use common household rubbing alcohol rather than gasoline to test the overflow circuits. And some folks have reported using plain tap water.

Good Fortune! :)

Fix the cam plug leaks first and see if the smoke stops. It may sound crazy, but I had similar symptoms. The leak that's allowing oil to come out is also sucking air into the cases. This over-pressure vents an oil mist into your airbox from the oil breather. It will be a very light smoke and not start until the bike is warm. For a quick test, run the bike until the smoke starts. Now disconnect the oil breather hose to the airbox and see if the smoke stops. Don't ride it like this, as the oil will be blown towards the rear of the bike. You don't want it to be your rear tire or brake disk.

Oil rings are probably stuck. Drain oil and fill 50/50 20W50/ATF.
Run engine, don't ride.
If you want to ride, use 50/50 mix of straight 60(from Harley dealer)/ATF.

Sometimes you'll get some lousy advice.

Some ATF is high in detergents that can damage seals and other parts. On a 30-40 year old engine the only way to stop them from leaking is to replace them. I use Viton valve guide seals and NEVER use NOS rubber parts.

This is what can happen to 40 year NOS rubber. This happened within a year of installation.

I'll be buying a pair soon. This company has a 100% money back guarantee and I've been happy with their service.
I have a list of other suppliers that do good business and treated me right as well in my Good Guys thread.
