Crap!!! Valves? was created by missionkz
Ok other then a F**'n bent intake valve, What could make my cam shim gap go from .003" to .011" basically after getting off the 75mph freeway and coming home two miles, but hearing some subtle and unusual noise from the carbs/engine?
All the others, including exhaust, are right around .003".
Jesus
I just started it again and can hear the far left carb coughing when cranking the engine with plug wires off.
Damn it, only 3500 miles on this head.

A year ago a couple cam cap bolt threads stripped out while riding. I limped home thinking the worst, found the problem and fixed it. Hop it's as simple for you.

Crap, I am really bummed.
I just checked compression,
All the other shims and lobes are running .003", to a couple of .004" in the exhaust except this one intake is at around .012" and.... ugh,,,, 175psi-180psi on #2, #3, #4 cylinders but only 24psi on #1..... :(
Of course we all had a big bike ride planned for this weekend and another next Thursday.....
Maybe time to hang up the 40 year nostalgic bike hobby and buy a $20,000 cruiser.... .

Or at least keep two 40 year old bikes around so you always have a ride.

I'm so sorry to hear this...... happened to me and it took me 5 years to get over it and to tear into mine ..... wishing there was something to say other than to say I've been there too.

Can you pull the head to asses the damage? You have stock cams, it's strange one valve would do this.

Yes, I agree! This shouldn't happen with stock cams and those Wiseco 1075cc pistons!
I have the bike striped down... just have to loosen and remove the head bolts to pop if off.

Maybe it's a galled valve guide holding the valve cracked open a smidgen.
I don't beat this thing at all,
I virtually never take it over 7500-8000rpm in any gear and even then, it is really REALLY rare to do that,
Although yesterday I did run it up pretty hard through the gears on a couple freeway ramps for fun, (missing no gears), popped it up to about 110mph-115mph on the speedo and then just cruised at around +85mph on the interstate for 10-12 miles before coming home. Ran great but, on the way home, I noticed the engine was running a little doggy and dull on the side streets..... as I pulled into the driveway, it acted like it was running out of gas....I now assume, idling on three cylinders,

I keep thinking about last spring when the machine shop told me the head had a little warp and they milled it .012" to flatten it out and then those Wiseco 10.25:1 domes.
Using the one piece W3918-AD head gasket from Wiseco and a single base gasket, at I think, .010".
Have to get another head gasket now... not cheap either.
I'm hoping I didn't drive a piston into the intake.... but isn't that usually an exhaust valve clearance issue?

When I had the head done last spring, they said there were two bent exhaust valves and one intake was a little tweaked. So I had all of the bad ones replaced.
But this head is not the original head off my 77' KZ1000A,
It is my back up head, and the history behind it is a bit nebulous to say the least.
So, off it comes in an hour..... I'll turn it upside down and pour some mineral spirits in the intake port and probably watch it drip out of the valve seat..... ugh

Darn... it is really a bite to crack this open because this motor was very tight with no drips or weeps anywhere except that damn set of wires from the dyno cover by the shifter rubber.

This week is shot,
Tuesday, I'll run it by the machine shop and see what they can do and how long will it take.
I still have two new NOS intake valves and one exhaust valve in my good parts box and those new valve guide seals if needed.
Maybe I can still salvage that ride out towards Utah the following week end but I'm not betting on it....

OK.... it's bent a very tiny amount.
I poured an ounce of mineral oil in the intake port and it runs right out the valve head and seat and on to my bench,
There are ZERO marks on the piston dome, and nothing marked around the valve head... !!??!
It did not hit the piston and it is not overheated.
It's just bent a little.
WTF? I wonder if the valve guide is boogered up or something.

This one is a mystery to me, yet it is off the seat a bit.
Enough that with my small, super bright LED light shining into the port, I can see light leaking out near the spark plug hole in the combustion chamber.
I am amazed how good condition the head gasket is and bone dry all around the cam chain tunnel.... if I was a cheap skate mofo, I'd consider reusing it... LOL
Also, some black'ish rich carbon deposits around the ridge area, so I'm changing the pilot jets back to stock in increasing the main jets a step up.

I reused mine when I put the stock pistons two years ago. Didn't have copper gasket spray so I used silver paint like in the good ol days. Held up until I put in my 10.25/1 pistons and new one piece gasket. I'd use a new valve to gauge the guide for burrs or slop.
