Stripped oil pan plug was created by galacticninth
I was draining my oil because I thought that I had over filled it. When I backed out the drain plug I noticed some semi circular metal shavings. Of course I was immediately concerned because I've always feared stripping the threads on an oil pan. I tightened it back up as carefully as I could but it didn't hold any torque I applied to it (kept spinning).
My question is, what is the best way to fix this? I'm aware that some people would just replace the whole pan while others may put in a helicoil. I've looked around for the thread specifications that apply to the drain plug but I've been unable to find anything. Has anyone made this mistake before? If you went the helicoil route could you recommend a kit or do you remember what size you installed?
Thanks for any and all help

It's a KZ650B, 1978. I'm not totally sure on the size (I'm at work right now) I think it was 12mm or maybe 14mm.

Auto parts stores sell self tapping oversize drain plugs. Take your old plug in to the store so you can get the proper size.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI would just replace it and buy a torque wrench for future use. The KZ650 oil pan is very inexpensive, and eBay is loaded with them. Contact seller first and make sure the drain plug threads are not stripped. Here's are just a few examples. Ed

I agree with Ed....that way you can also check to make sure there is no other damage or stray pieces of metal etc. Remove old pan carefully and you may not need to get another gasket.....Definitely get a torque wrench as you will need it for many things

Ok, I think I'll order a new pan and gasket. I'm just a little worried about it leaking when I'm done, right now I don't have any oil leaks except for the stripped plug. Is there anything I should do/check while I have the pan off?
