Air Suction System Inspection was created by imagesofhis
I working on getting my 1980 KZ-750e back up and running. While taking off the tank and carbs I noticed the Air Suction System looked a bit messy (oil) and I was wondering how important this system is to getting the bike back up a running. The tubes are cracked and there is a bit of oil on the right side. That sends alarms off in my head, but don't know what could be the issue. Let me know what you all think. Thanks in advance - I'm not very mechanically minded and could use all of your expertise.

The air suction system is a useless bit of crap attached to an otherwise fantastic engine...

Remove the two hoses from the valve cover, then the vacuume valve, then remove the line that runs to the top of the air box.

Take these parts and look them over carefully... then throw them in the garbage where they belong.

Plug the port at the top of the air box, then buy a hose to connect the two ports on the valve covers together thus eliminating the entire system.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Thanks Tyler...I suspected the system was junk (It just looked like a crappy design). I wasn't sure though. I appreciate the reply!!!!

Actually, it was a rather ingenious system that allowed Kawasaki to meet U. S. emissions regs without losing a single horsepower, fuel mileage or driveability. It was also light and cheap. How many automotive emission systems of that time could we say the same about?

Yup it was simple and cheap, and it just skirted the emissions requirement so long as the carbs were tuned sufficiently lean. But in reality it did very little if anything. Smog systems without EGR and a catalytic converter don't really do anything. Dilution as it seems was a solution to pollution.. yes some CO and HC's can be converted, but the effect was minimal.

As the OP lives in Texas, where vehicles over 24 year old do not require emissions tests anywhere in the sate he can throw that crap away.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

One side is rather oily at the valve cover? Is the oil a result of a problem I should address or normal?

A KZ750 Turbo valve cover can be used to get rid of all the dorky plumbing. To do the job right the air injection ports themselves should be plugged off before putting the valve cover on.

The oil is probably normal. The way the kawasaki clean air system & crankcase breather are plumbed into the airbox, some of the oil & crankcase gases from the crankcase breather are sucked into the clean air system.
