Is this newly purchased head gasket damaged?
09 Jun 2016 13:20 - 09 Jun 2016 14:11
Hi all. I'm doing a top end job on my 1980 kz650, and I ordered a kawi manufactured NOS head gasket from ebay. I received it and ther are several issues I'm not sure about. I was wondering if these problems are serious ones, especially #1. Should I order a new gasket, or are these not really problems.
#1 - The edge of one of the ends of the aluminum headgasket is bent. I think this must have happened during shipping.
(zoom of above)
#2 - The gasket is made of two sandwiched pieces of aluminum. These are not fully bound together, they are delaminated. Are they supposed to be?
#3) There is very fine rubber covering, like a paint, on portions of the gasket, and it has begun to flake/pull/rub off.

Send it back and buy a genuine Kawasaki head gasket from a different source. To me that one does not look like one made by Kawasaki. Ed

NOS is often old junk. Try to find a Cometic.

09 Jun 2016 15:41Thanks all for your thoughts. I'll find a replacement. Steve, I thought I had heard someone on this site write that I should try to find a kawi-manufactured replacement. You've had good luck w/ the Cometics?swest wrote: NOS is often old junk. Try to find a Cometic.

If you have the Kawasaki part number, for that head gasket, email your local Kawasaki dealer and see if they have it, I have had good luck finding new parts for old bikes, and the best part of it is they are always in good condition.

That would be best. I've always had good luck with Cometic's.

OK, i'll give them a go. I was put off originally because the Kawi part is aluminum is Cometic only makes a fiber gasket for this bike.

I'll take an OEM Kawasaki gasket over aftermarket anyday.

I think you will find it is a 3 piece, the later model laminte gasket with the coating. Looks like it got damaged in the post, or got left on a shelf for 30 years for a reason....
It will bend back, if it is unused I think. The main issue is whether it has been fitted and the bore pressings are crushed.
Torque your head down in stages, and retourque when cold after a few hundred miles or so.
