KZ1000 Flywheel won't come off! was created by pinkiedog64
Hello all,
Trying to remove flywheel from 1980 KZ1000E shaft drive to replace starter overrun clutch pieces. Took much effort to remove flywheel bolt...way more than I thought it should. Had to use impact and heat. Once I got it off I saw remnants of red Loctite on the bolt and not just a tiny dab; the whole bolt was covered. Have correct puller bolt (M16x1.5 I believe). Threads in fine and bottoms out against end of crank like it should. Have tried tightening the heck out of it and wracking end of puller bolt and also applying heat from propane torch. Still not coming off. Have even tried impact on puller bolt to no avail. I'm thinking some previous owner put red Loctite on the taper fit of the flywheel-to-crank and I just haven't been able to overcome it. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Stephan

Keep heating it. Apply the heat inside the rotor then try the puller.

Will try. Is there a seal where the crank goes through the case that may be get damaged or melt? I believe red loctite gives way at or above 350F. Should I be worried about heat transferring into other parts like deals or flywheel magnets?

That's why I was suggesting heat in the center. The aluminum and magnets should act as a heat sync. Try to heat the inside of the hub not the crank. Good luck.

Get the biggest ball bearing you can fit in the bolt hole before running the bolt in.

Careful with the heat if you want to reuse the rotor. If you get too close to the magnets they will break and come off, rotor will be shot.
Sometimes thats all you can do. Some rotors are just on there that tight. I doubt red lock tite would hole that on there like that, they make grey locktite for press fits but I wouldn't use it.

Some years of rear axle will thread in. I did that with a weight on it and made like a slide hammer.
