1976 KZ900 Dynamo cover oil leak

What is the best way to stop a Dynamo cover from leaking ? It seems to be leaking from within the wires coming out it. I tried to use silicon within the wires but it still leaks some.

Thanks

You can replace the rubber grommet, though that generally involves cutting and splicing the wires that go t hrough it. A little dab of Three Bond on the back side where the wires go through is cheap insurance.

You can buy a new rubber grommet. You'll need to splice the wires and I use crazy glue on the woven covers on the yellow wires to make sure they seal. Z1E has them.

It's pretty common for it to leak there. I believe the cloth on the wires wicks the oil out or there isn't a good bond with the grommet and wires. I sealed mine 5-6 years ago and hasn't leaked yet. I removed the cover and cleaned the snot out of the wires/grommet area using brake clean. I'd let it completely dry, then clean again. I did this about 6 times until there was no traces of oil on the wiring or grommet area. I used liquid gasket and let it seep into the cloth of the wires and pool on top of the grommet. Also filled in the cavity just below the grommet with silicone and sealed the grommet to the aluminum. Let it dry in the bench for a coupla days before reinstalling.

I will take it apart here in a couple of weeks and do what you recommended.

Thanks again

Mine has dripped from there for over 20 years now... I've had a new grommet for years, ... maybe I'll be ambitious and fix it some day... LOL.

. It leaked for ever until I got it all together I splice mine by redoing my plug with a tool and new ends on the 3 wires to the stater. Repull the sock and all. I hate cut and soldered and shrink boot, its just not as neat.
