Gasket sealant at exhaust ports

1981 KZ650-CSR. oem 750E muffler system. new oem exhaust port gaskets.

What sort of hi-temp sealant can be used to seal the exhaust ports?
I bought some Versachem Mega Black silicone gasket maker. 400oF, 650oF intermittent.

#1 was leaking a little the last time, even with new gaskets. I did re-tighten the exhaust holder nuts soon after riding the bike, but it still leaked & I don't want to have that again. doh. .... Thanks.

I don't think any kind of silicone sealant will work because it gets too hot. On mine, I have to double up on the copper donuts to get them to seal. I use super glue to glue the two donuts together so they stay aligned while I install them.

Thanks. I saw a couple of posts a few months back in which RTV was used for the same problem, but I don't recall a specific product. Permatex Ultra Copper sealant is for exhaust maniifolds & is supposed to be good to about 700o F intermittent.

Martin, I never heard of or seen the stuff you have? versa??
But yes. You can use high temp RTV. I have always used the "PERMATEX line for ever. Over 40 years. Even ULTRA COPPER will work.
Iused this on my Harley shovelhead without any gasket, just RTV.
For $6-$8 bucks, get some permatex red RTV. Sold at all name brand auto stores Pep Boys, Advance, O'reilly, Car Quest.
Don't hesitate! Just Do It! Run about an 1/8" bead around copper gasket. Let it scim over about 5-10 minutes. good to go.

Thanks. That reply sounds familiar but I couldn't remember the username. hee. I got the versachem because its max temp was higher than the other products I saw at the auto parts store.

I would not use any sealer. It will just burn up in that environment.

On my 750E I struggled with leaks and wound up using new OEM copper crush gaskets in conjunction with a flat gasket I cut from special exhaust header gasket material. Cutting that stuff was miserable but I got er done. I think you could just use some old copper gaskets that were crushed flat in addition to the new crush gaskets. You just need some extra thickness because even with the header clamp nuts tight, the pipe didn't pull in close enough to the head..

I've used the copper and it's still there when I take the pipes off. I bought new crush gaskets but will keep one old one in there as a spacer. I'll silicon them too. B)

I've heard of people using Suzuki exhaust gaskets because they're almost twice as thick as the Kawasaki gaskets

I use the high-temp copper to hold the copper crush-gaskets in place inside the ports while positioning the pipes, split collars and clamps onto the studs and starting the nuts, so the gaskets don't come tumbling out in the middle of things.
Makes it an easier one-man operation.

If the split collars are the correct length, meaning long enough to press the pipe flange tightly against the gasket when the clamp is tightened, it should not leak.

When the split collars are slightly too short, the pipe flange won't be held tightly enough against the gasket, which may allow some exhaust leakage.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks. I'm expecting to use either the red rtv as suggested above or the ultra copper. It's a stock type exhaust system having the flanges welded to the header tips & the half-moon collars are correct for the application.

I've been meaning to try the fiber gaskets, but I haven't placed an order with Z1 in a while. I'll give the sealant a shot this time & if it doesn't work next time try the fiber gaskets. Thanks again.
