Engine Rebuild Question was created by acw380
I am currently rebuilding a 1981 KZ750 E2 engine and I think I might be missing a part. The person I bought this bike from had no idea what he was doing and slapped the thing together with all sorts of broken/missing parts so I do not trust how anything was put together when I got it. Upon installing the transmission and shifter drum I noticed a large hole with two threaded holes next to it just behind where the clutch goes. I've looked through all the parts I have and through all the diagrams I could find but I still cannot find a part that goes in this hole. Is this feature left behind from some other engine model that uses that same case or am I just overlooking something obvious?

Go to partzilla site and look up your bike on their parts diagram.

That's what I have been using. There is no depiction of the right side of the engine and no call out for any part that might go there.

The hole is right behind the transmission so I don't think its a kick start. All the pictures I've seen on google have this hole empty as well.

You were right swest/steve. It was a hole for a kickstart from a 650. They use the same case and the 650 has a kickstart option. Thank for the help everyone. Im kind of curious how it works now since its so far back in the engine, apparently you can convert a 750 to accept a kickstarter.

The kick start turns the clutch basket in which turns the crank.

You are not going to find it on a 750 part's break down as they didn't use it.
The case casting's are the same as the 650 that's why the hole and mounting
bolt hole's are there.
Look on a 1980 and earlier 650 break down and you will find the starter part's
and if you use a 650 clutch cover you should be able to add a kick starter to a KZ750 motor
but not a GPz (ZX) motor.

Good to know. I like my kick starter even though I hardly ever use it.

Took the kick starter lever off my 650 in the early 80s and have never used it ..... if I got a 81 650 clutch cover without the hole for the kicker shaft can the kick starter guts be removed...... have often thought about it (and not sure if I'd do it but maybe) for weight removal....just never knew if it could be done.

It can be taken out but why? When I needed it I REALLY needed it.
