Its been five years so what can I say...

The manual says when you replace the filter the bike needs 3.5 liters of oil. It was fully drained and I made sure I measured the oil to exactly 3.5 liters (Rotella diesel oil based on reading this thread ).

The oil level window is completely full. I seem to remember that being normal. That after it runs it the next time everything spreads out and then shows within the high and low marks. Is that the way it works?

I opened the breather cover and verified there is no oil in there.

Sounds good to me. I check my oil and once in a while I can't see any. I get a quart, it only takes 1/4. Most of the time I don't need it at all.

Unless you use the kickstarter to pump the engine dry, they never take the full refill amount. Yours is probably OK, maybe a shade high which won't hurt anything.

Absent center-stand, and without a sober helper near by, with cold engine, can sit on the bike to hold it level, and use a telescoping mirror to view the oil level. I prefer this to kneeling or squatting down beside the bike and attempting to hold it steady, level and upright while viewing the oil window, which risks losing control and allowing the bike to fall over, even when cold sober.

These very inexpensive mirrors are readily available at automotive supply stores such as Auto-Zone.

Good Fortune :)
