10w-40 is not too thick, but automotive oil can cause severe clutch slippage.

Did you over fill the crankcase?

First thing you should do is drain that oil and fill it with the proper type. And as Texaskz said . don't overfill . crankshaft can slap overfilled oils and cause issues.

Unless over filled and somehow got up past the oil control and compression rings, fouling the plugs... I see ZERO relationship with what has happened and adding oil.

I was thinking overfilled to nearly the point of hydrolock, not fouling plugs.

The proper oil meets JASO-MA specifications and is blended specifically for motorcycles with wet clutches. Currently blended diesel engine oils will also work. What you want to avoid are automotive oils that have friction modifiers. They will have the energy conserving logo somewhere on the bottle, often on the back.
How much oil did you add?

I suspect that there is a non-oil related problem here that just happened to appear at the time you added oil.
Could be some trash in the fuel, or a cracked coil, or a broken plug wire or cap.........

Some additional information might be helpful. Does the engine start and accelerate as it should? Is the problem worse at certain rpms? Has anything else been changed or adjusted?

I'm going out on a limb here but this sounds like something as simple as water in the fuel tank or condensation build-up et cetera.
I've had that cause me lots of problems in the past (classic bikes and vintage cars for that matter).
Engine can shake like a tree limb in a storm.
Performance goes sporadic to zero.
Stalling at stop lights and so forth.
If you have a fuel filter, check it and if not, try just draining the fuel into a visible container so you can watch/see if fuel floats on top of water.
