Hi
I am new to the forum, new to KZ's and for that matter Kawasaki's
I have just bought myself a 76' KZ400 as a bit of a basket case, it is missing panels, headlight assembly and fenders as well as a bunch of other bits and pieces so its going to become a bare bones cafe racer. That is if i can obtain a few critical items.

First off.....I have pulled down the top end and in the process broken the LH piston oil ring (how?? is beyond me), the issue I have is that it is a one piece oil ring as apposed to 2 rings and waffle spacer. All the searching I have done indicates that the OEM rings were 3 piece. Can someone verify if this is correct? The piston does not look like the original round head one rather its like this one. Apart from measuring is there anyway to identify what size piston it is??
Any info/ tips would be much appreciated.

Welcome. Rings can break if you look at them sideways. The smaller bikes seem to be hard to find parts for. Try eBay? Pics are always helpful. There have been quite a few 400/440's on here as of late. Maybe they can help as well. B)

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThese are over sized. But the part number could help.

Looks like the 70s models use a different style of piston compared to the later models.

Thanks for the reply guys, my bad I didnt explain very well what I was after.

The pistons I have visually look like this one though when I measure the skirt It comes in at spec of the standard piston, though this could be due to wear. The only identification mark is a "2" under the front skirt but i cannot find anywhere what this refers too, so my predicament is that i need to know what size piston I have before I can order rings.

If I were you I'd some calipers and measure the piston and bore size. Then measure the ring land width and compare the numbers to those in the Kawasaki factory service manual for your bike. That should tell a story (hopefully).

I measured them, the pistons measured within the standard piston size spec, the bore measured bang on its minimum spec, Still leaves me trying to figure out what size pistons I have because even though they measured for standard size they could be .04 oversized ones that are worn.

Not possible. No way someone put worn out oversize pistons inside a standard bore.
