secondary shaft retaining plate was created by cherrymetal
Any tips on removal and re fitment of the retaining plate with the three countersunk cross head screws that are staked? It's the one that sits under the secondary shaft sprocket.
I've managed to destroy the cross on two of the screws already, I used an air wrench but it just wouldn't overcome the staking.
Is it essential to remove this to split the crankcase halves?
Cheers all! ( it's a GPz750 motor by the way, aka ZX750.)

You do know that they are JIS, not Phillips, right? Phillips bits will cam out of the slots and wreck the head. A Phillips can usually be modified to fit properly, and JIS screwdrivers and bits are available.
Once the slots are buggered, a staked screw is gonna be a real pain to remove. As to your question about necessity, I don't know for sure, so I'd defer to the manual.

Bugger. No I didn't know they were JIS, I'd never heard of them till now, I thought there was only philips or pozi. Have just looked for bits for my draper impact driver but can't find any the right size at the moment. I might possibly be able to get a bit to hold if it's the right one. Otherwise I'll have to drill them out.
If I can split the cases ill be able to get the remainder spark eroded out at work ( got yo fit them in a haversack to get into work undetected!!

It's not clear in the haynes manual if it needs removing to split the cases by the way, is it in the clymer or oem manual?

Do you need a 5/16 impact bit? Try ebay for a #3 and modify it like Ed says or you might not need to if it fits gd.

You "might have too grind the tip off a little is all...... search JIS bits on here for Ed's write up.......Look under "tools" then JIS screwdrivers around the 4th tread down ........ looks like you still might get em out but that one is tore up pretty bad...... mine were tough but I got em.

That's not too bad. Take your impact bit that fits as well as can be and use a hammer with it to clean up the damage. You might start with the smallest one the go to the next size up. With the hammering it should be loosing them up too. You need a impact driver to do this.

People around here are JIS crazy. A regular old #2 phillips bit on an impact driver will remove those screws. There is thread lock on those screws so use a little heat if you can't get them out easily.

Now that they are buggered you may have to use a dremel cutoff wheel and make a slot, then use a blade bit in your impact driver. I should have those parts in the spares bin if you need a new plate and screws.
