material/thickness for transmission cover gasket?
13 Jan 2016 09:53
Hi all. I recently had to replace the trnsmission cover on my 1980 kz650. the gasket I purchased on ebay turned out to be made for a slightly different setup, and though it holds oil now, it's definitely not perfect, and in one place in particular, only half of the width of the gasket is sandwiched.
I'd like to make my own gasket to replace this. Can someone tell me what gasket material and thickness I should use?

I can measure a gasket later tonight when I get home but I suspect the thickness is not critical. 1/6" or so should work.

I've never bought gasket material. I'm trying to find a suitable sheet on Amazon, but am not sure what fits - there are lots of rubber and cork gasket materials.

Why not just buy another gasket? I've made my own but even with the ball pien trick it's a PITA.

Just buy the correct Kawasaki gasket and be done with it.

Oops, make that 1/16" thick.
BTW, I've made lots of gaskets in the past from gasket paper. It's easy to trace the pattern and cut out using scissors. Use a common paper hole punch for the holes. Beats the heck out of waiting a week for a Kawasaki gasket for a non critical application.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration
No argument here, but if he plans to buy the material from Amazon he will still be waiting for the mailman, so he may as well have the gasket delivered. At around $8 delivered it's probably even cheaper than buying a sheet of gasket material from Amazon. Ed

Re: material/thickness for transmission cover gasket?
13 Jan 2016 13:25 - 13 Jan 2016 13:28When I made gaskets for my rebuild, I used the Auto Zone best gasket material. I recall it was about .032" (1/16") thick, the material type was N8904 or something like that. It was really good stuff, has even worked perfectly for the valve cover gasket which is typically thicker.aenikolopov wrote: Hi all.
