I wouldn't use VHT on anything that might get fuel on it. It's not very chemical resistant, as others have said. It's a shame, because it goes on well and the finish is nice. Eastwood makes a 2K urethane spray paint, which should be very chemical resistant. The only downside is it's high cost (for spray paint).

I have used Gun Kote on my motors and pipes since back in the late 70's. If you put it on right, it WILL not come off!!!! And you have to follow the instructions too. I used to bead blast the cases first. I could never find anyone that had aluminum oxide media around me back then, so I just used glass bead. You MUST heat the parts up to like to around 100 or so degrees BEFORE you start to coat them. When you first start spraying the parts, the Gun Kote gets sucked into the metal, and you want to spray more on but don't or you will get runs. You just keep lightly spraying it on till you get that nice dark grey coating!!! Then you HAVE to bake the parts again in the oven again for like a hour or so at I think if I remember right 300 degrees. It been like since 1985 I last did any Gun Kote spraying. AND GOD DOES IT SMELL!!!!!! Plus the overspray NEVER dries like paint overspray does. I had to pour MEK on my basement floor to remove all the overspray. NOTHING else would cut it. Plus your oven will smell for awhile too!!! Your next 4 or 5 pizzas will taste a bit funny too!!!!

If you apply Gun Kote like how I descripe above, it will NEVER come off or flake!!!! My KZ1000 motors have been torn down like 30 to 40 times and washed in SafetyKleen, then sprayed down with carb cleaner every time, and the Gun Kote has NOT come off!!!!!!! The motor in my KZ1000 Superbike that I been putting back together that you see in Projects was coated back in 1979, and it still to this day looks good!!! I WOULD NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BUT GUN KOTE IF I HAD TO COAT ANOTHER MOTOR. END OF QUESTION.

I regret not using Gunkote on my engine. I was concerned with heating the parts to the required cure temperature for fear of the cylinder liners and/or the valve guides loosening. With hindsite I think it would have been fine to heat the parts to 200F to give them enough toughness to deal with engine assembly, and then the coating could final cure while the engine is in use. I know that an air cooled engine like these will get up to 300F on a hot day so eventually the coating would get fully cured.

I did use Gunkote on my brake calipers and wheels and they turned out nicely. Only thing I don't like is they are glossier than you would expect from "satin".

That is real nice work you have done Ness. In the past I have never used primer with VHT. Back in the early 90's I had the heads off of my Shovel head Harley, my machinist ran them thru the steel shot tumbler. I did not know about. I was expecting fresh glass bead aluminum.
So I sprayed the heads with aluminum VHT. I don't drive the old Harley much. But they look like I painted them this year.

And I know I have seen other articles about Gun Kote, can't remember, but what is the cost?? Say for a KZ engine?

Gunkote comes in various sizes. A pint costs $33 which is more than enough for an engine.

The thing with heating the parts first is to avoid runs. I didn't have much issue in that regard and I didn't preheat the wheels for example.

Main thing with Gunkote is you need a perfectly clean part. No old paint remnants anywhere.

Thanks! simple website! Not bad at all wish I would have done this this summer. I sprayed my engine short block with PJ1.
Still sitting on engine stand in cold garage
Side note! story, tangent. when we were late teens, 20yrs. we hung out at the Niagara river partying, drinking etc.
There was a street light in the corner. So a buddy goes and takes his Dad's Hi power .270 rifle and we put a potato on the barrel thinking it would make a silencer. We shoot out the street light. It worked! BUT! the acid in the potato etched in to the gun barrel. Luckily we found a guy we knew who could do gun Blueing. So we took care of that. And the dudes Dad never found out we took his rifle out to shoot a street light out at our hang around spot! About 1977. True story!

I've never tried the rattle can stuff. That stuff is Brownell's, and the stuff I bought was from KG coatings, so not sure if they are the same.

I always got my GunKote in a rattle can from KalGard back in the late 70's to early 80's. GunKote was the nastiest smelling stuff that I ever used that came out of a spray can!!!!! Plus most of the cans never sprayed till they were empty. The cans ran out of propellant before they were empty. I never had a air brush back then, so I had to use the rattle cans.

The other product I liked from KalGard was their KG9600 COATINGS. It came in various colors. Their Light Gold is what Morris used to coat their magnesium wheels back in the 70's. It was applied almost like the GunKote was. I did many a wheel and engine cases with their KG9600 coatings back then.

I need to do a few motor parts in GunKote, and I wonder if KalGard still offers it in a rattle can??
