Im looking for recommendations for engine building.
Who is close to me ..North Georgia and how much does a complete build cost?
i have a 1980 KZ1000 shaft with 20,000 miles .
I just feel the engine needs gone over . 35 years is a long tome for seals ,bearings, ect..
Not looking to go all out just keep it as close to stock as possible so it can be a solid dependable rider..

20,000 miles is still a baby if the engine has had regular oil changes and not been too badly abused. You may want to have someone check it out thoroughly to see if there are any problems, and if none are found just perform a full tune-up. You may be surprised at how well it runs. The KZ engine is pretty robust. My KZ650 has never had the head pulled or any other serious work done, and with about 60,000 miles on it I do not hesitate to ride it anywhere. Ed

I adjusted the valves and have done quiet a bit of maintenance on it right away when i got it.. It does run well and your right about the miles
. If they are actual.. To me the transmission isn't as smooth as i would like and i can tell the pan has been off . That tells me there may have been an issue before. so for me if i would like to have that looked at and if i have to go that far i may as well do the rest..

Can you be more specific about the transmission? It may be something as simple as a maladjusted clutch cable or a gummed up clutch release mechanism.

Kawasaki builds a good motor. Should last well into 100K if taken care of.

Liquid cooled Kawasaki ZG100's have been reported to go to 300K.

I cleaned, oiled and adjusted the cable.. and adjusted it at the engine. behind the release . It just feels clunky to me when going through the gears. not smooth .. it jumped out of gear once on me but i think i lazy shifted it. I haven't thought about the release mechanism being the culprit. Hmmm

My tranny was clunky until I put in my clutch. You might try taking out the clutch plates, oil them and put them back in. Might be stuck together. I think that's what happened to mine.
