Cam chain question was created by neighbourdave
I am trying to get my Z1-R motor back together and have an issue with the cam chain. I was going to use a DID replacement chain (219FTS(S)).
It has straight side bar links on it where as the factory one has 8 shaped side bars. The flat side bars ride against the plastic on the cam sprockets and actually hold the chain away from the teeth.
Has anyone else experienced this?

That straight link chain isn't the correct part. According to the parts diagram (see link below) you need Kawasaki part number 21070-003. I believe it is still available or you may find one on ebay. Ed

I used one I bought at a Kaw dealer in 78 after I broke a cam chain. It had bronze pins so it was easy to take apart and repeen it. It was supposed to be a heavy duty upgrade. Had no problems with it until the wreck in 86. I noticed the notches left by the old chain in the plastic but ran it anyway.

I figured that was the answer, I just didn't want to admit it.
Now I have to pull the cases apart again.
Crap.
