I'm in the process of rebuilding a spare 1000 engine I've had sitting in storage for ages. While everything seems to be in good shape, the valves and the Pistons are pretty nasty looking. The bike only had 18k on it, and from what the last owner said, it had been sitting for 20 years. Thoughts?

That's pretty normal carbon build up.

Soaking the piston in carb dip will loosen the crud. Be sure to remove any carbon that has gotten down into the ring grooves.

The fact that there is minimal brown coloring on the piston below the rings suggests the rings were sealing pretty well. You can most likely get away with using a 240 grit flex hone on the cylinder and installing new rings. It's always best to measure the parts for wear first just to be sure though.

Yeah agreed. It looks fairly normal to me too, with a nod towards valve guide seal wear and some minor oil being pulled through them.

Permatex Gasket Remover works good to get rid of the carbon.
