So, I havent dropped anything yet (frame or motor) but I need to put the motor back in. I can enlist helpers.

Dont want to scratch newly painted frame or drop the motor. If I have 2 or even 3 people do I try and slide the motor back in through the right side like it came out (when I didnt care about scratching the frame) or do we do the lay the motor on its right side and guide the frame over it?

I went to Home Depot and purchased 1-1/2" tubing, split it down the middle and slid it over the frame to protect it. Worked very well. Just remember to go high enough. I didn't and scratched my frame about head height.

My girlfriend helped me with the frame, we got to a bind spot and while I was assessing the problem she gave it a rattle and it dropped right down and I got a scratch in the head area. She bragged how easy it was! I just let it go, I should have wrapped it with sil plate foam

I put my 750 engine back into the frame by myself recently, and I've got a gimpy back. I cut strips of denim fabric out of some old jeans and wrapped them around the frame and used duct tape to hold them in place. Set the engine on a milk crate and sort of slid it into place

How did u get it up on the milk crate? The motor is heavy. Like 200lbs? That's heavy for my skinny ass

Bolt description in the Kawasaki parts diagrams lists bolt size and length, usually.

I really like using an engine hoist like Kidkawie now I have one. I bought it to install the V8 in my CJ5 Jeep, but once I hit on the idea of using it for the work on my KZ1000, I wouldn't be without it. I suffered an exciting center stand folding issue doing the fork seals on my KZ650 so I know just how easily they can fold up if you upset the weight balance. My KZ1000 came minus a center stand and I went through all sorts of ideas as to how I was going to use my assorted selection of jacks and axle stands to support it while I did fork seals and lowered the forks to fit head light ears etc. and changed my rear wheel to an 18". Suddenly I realized lifting the frame with the engine hoist was the way to go, no chance of anything tipping over and it's easy to vary the height when you need room to get wheels under fenders or drop the forks out further etc. You can pick them up pretty cheaply if Harbor Freight has a sale. I got mine at a bankruptcy auction, but I think spending $80-$120 to buy one is money well spent, versus the potential damage of one "tip over incident". I may not bother getting a center stand after all, used center stands seem to be selling for more on eBay than I paid for my hoist.

Good luck getting that engine back in, I think you'll find the fastener issue less daunting than you think once you start re-assembly.
