Extreme Power loss, won't run right was created by girlbollas
I have a 1981 Kawasaki KZ305 CSR A-1. This bike sat out in the elements from 1984 until i 2012 when i came acquired it. i went through the bike and it has been running great since December of 2012. I took the bike out on the highway for the first time in since 1984 about 6 months ago. On the way home the bike revved up uncontrollably. I sealed the carb to engine boots, and went through the carbs again. One of the vacuum pistons had a hole in it. I replaced the piston and vacuum tested the carbs. Test drove the bike and cannot gain any speed. The bike will now idle (at 1200 rpm with the idle adjustment screw all the way out, but the throttle response is non-existent.) Top speed 30 mph after 5 minutes. I have since checked compression (130psi both cylinders), valve clearance (intake .14 mm, exhaust .21 mm), points gap, and timing. I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

You should definitely post some pics of the bike if you can. Are you still using the stock airbox setup? Fuel filter been checked ? It sounds like you getting poor combustion ( air/fuel) or restriction to fuel flow.

"I sealed the carb to engine boots" smells fishy. Many have tried and failed to restore old carb holder with silicone and snake oil. Long story short: it doesn't work: you have to buy new ones.

Yup. Sometimes money is short and sealing is only temporary. Mine lasted 20 years, I expect my new ones to last as long.

I forgot to mention this bike is completely stock. I have attached some pictures of the plugs. Yes, i am using the OE air-box. The fuel filter is new as of last night. The carb to engine boots did not have any visible cracks, i read they were a common problem so i coated them in black rtv silicone just in case. With the bike running i coated them in brake cleaner and there was no change in RPM. I ordered some new ones, just waiting for them to come in. This bike is equipped with 2 Keihin CV32 carburetors. If the issue is that the carbs need to be tuned, is the fuel adjusting screw located behind the attached plug?

If the carb holders have cracks they will be on the mating surfaces where the holders seal against the cylinder head rather than along the length of the holders. Ed

Are the spark plugs wet? A picture of the sparkplugs could go along way. Maybe i missed it but Does putting on the choke make a difference? If it was running correctly before, then you worked on the carb ( found a bad diaphragm), I would say maybe one cylinder is getting different fuel air mix than the other.

By the look of the plugs, they're not firing.

Yeah it looks like either your running really rich on one cylinder ( if that right plug is actually wet in the picture) or its not firing. You could measure the exhaust temp at idle. The temp differnce between the cylinders can tell you a lot. IR thermometers are fairly cheap.

I had the same issue with mine. It turned out the coils were the issue. Also the plug you point to on the carb is hiding the fuel mixture screw. On my carbs there was a lot of junk in there. Perhaps a full tear down of the carbs to clean is in order. I used m.e.k. and after a 24 hour soak the carbs came out nice.
