KZ1000 Plastic Clutch Release was created by FrankenKZ650
Hello All,

Just got a new project- 1977 KZ1000. Runs great, but I plan on doing the normal stuff (valve adjust, go through brakes, etc.). I'm also going to paint it the original wine red.

The clutch was difficult to operate, so I removed and cleaned the release mechanism, which is the plastic worm gear type. My question is, will the ball / cage type from my 81 KZ750-4 parts bike be compatible with the 1000? The 1000's release is working fine now after a disassemble and clean up, but I can't help but think the plastic piece will want to fail eventually.

Pic of the new project included. Thanks for any input regarding the clutch release!

I have two of them and one more is on the way. I won a cover with the clutch actuator in it. Mine are 40 years old. Still good. The ball bearing type has it's issues as well. They can be temperamental. The clutch arm I have now I will weld a short extension on it like what zukedave did to his. Just a little longer and the pull won't be so hard. This set up is tough on cables. Eventually I plan on getting a hydrolic slave to put in the old cover and upgrade the system.

The nylon setup works fine for me, and it is easier to pull than my 83 550 was (which had the ball and ramp type) not sure if it will fit, but I know the all steel version from the 79-80 ltd will fit on a 77 cover.

I haven't heard of too many nylon pusher parts failures on the kz's but the triples are somewhat notorious.

my bikes; 80kz1000(project), 77 gl1000, 74 h2 (project)
Past; 78 kz1000, 83 kz550
