750E Cam Chain Tensioner Install was created by Nessism
Just got the top end installed and valves all adjusted up on my 750E. Went to install the valve cover and the cam chain rub block in the cover is depressing on the chain and seemingly stressing it. Do you guy wait until the cover is installed before you release the chain tensioner plunger? Also, what should be done with the lockscrew after it's released? Don't want to snug it down too much or the tensioner won't work but right now it's just loose..

Check with others first, but I believe you need to remove the tensioner. Ed

Think I'll pull off the spring cap and let the plunger go back a little, then lock it down. Then release the plunger after the cover is back on. Kind of a pain.

You're depending on it moving freely. I'd take it off and make sure it works.

Put the longer 6mm bolt in place of the short bolt on the tensioner to lock it's position before dissassembly, then after done remove the long bolt and reinstall the short is the way to do it. If you let the tensioner rod extend then no way to retract it without removing the tensioner.

You should remove the tensioner before reinstalling the valve cover.
The valve cover must be in place before the tensioner can be adjusted.

I removed mine. Loosened the lock bolt and manually pushed the tension rod in all the way, locked the bolt and after installing everything on the top, with the correct cam and chain set up.....remounted the adjuster, loosened the lock bolt and let the plunger slide into the chain for what I think is the correct tension on the slack side.
Then just tightened the jam nut.

Got it.:)

Removed the tensioner spring cap and released the wedge. Going to install the cover then screw down the cap/spring again.

Still not sure what to do with the lock screw. Just leave it loose?

I think you need to tighten the lock screw to hold the proper tension on the chain. If it is loose I believe the chain would be able to push against the spring causing it to move.

The "lock screw" does not hold the tensioner in one place. It keeps it from sliding all the way out. The tip of the bolt fits into a recession in the tensioner rod.

My best practice-
1. Remove spring cap
2. Remove lock bolt and replace (loosely) with longer bolt to hold tensioner in place
3. Push down on timing chain between the cams to slightly increase chain play
4. While holding chain down, tighten longer lock bolt in tensioner to hold the tensioner in this compressed state
5. Install cam cover
6. Install spring and cover in tensioner
7. Remove long lock bolt and replace with original shorter bolt
8. Have a beer
