That's kind of where I am heading with this. The cam journal looks fine... I suppose I would need to reassemble and check valve clearances again?daveo wrote: ..but I would just replace that pair of bearings and leave it at that.
It doesn't appear that the cam bearing journal was damaged at all, but if that bearing were slightly further over, we'd be discussing where to get a good motor. My guess is that it was an assembly mistake, and has not shifted since...how would or could it?

For as often as you get in there, I'd double/triple check...and rest assured.
Do your head a favor, use clamps to pull the cam caps down...not the bolts. That is, before removing and installing the cap bolts.
I know this, because I stripped more than one before the clamp idea dawned on me.
