It is a period bolt on oil cooler. 'period' bits like this are quite sought after.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces

would it therefore be a crime to remove it? I'm wondering if i need it and if i could replace it with something else. I'm trying to restore the bike it's in pretty rough shape.

I am sure i am one of many responses here.

But oil coolers dependent on your location are not necessary. If you had a bit more info of where you are... how you plan to ride, what you plan to do... there is likely not a need for it at all... dependent on those answers....

You don't need one at all unless you plan to race the bike or ride in extreme heat. Unless you are towing a heavy load behind the bike (very unlikely) if the temperatures in Utah when you ride are typically below 97 - 100 degrees I would simply remove it. The only other exception would be if the bike came with one as original standard equipment (such as GPz 1100). I didn't see what model bike you have, but I doubt it came with an oil cooler otherwise it probably would not have a Lockhart cooler. Ed

I plan to drive it daily up in the hills. I live in Utah so a higher altitude is a thing. I think it looks ugly personally. Would i need to replace it?

If you do remove it you will have to replace the fittings where the hoses connect to the back of the motor with the stock fittings, so don't remove it until you get those fittings

That model definitely was not equipped with an oil cooler as stock equipment. You don't need it. I have about 60,000 miles on my KZ650-C without one, and it can get pretty hot here in the summer. I've had the bike 38 years and have often ridden it when the temperature is above 95 degrees; no problems. Ed
