KZ1100 engine leak plan of attack was created by diego092409
I have my 1982 gpz1100 running again albeit roughly. I think I can straighten out the fuel injection without any worries. It is leaking oil like it originally did when I tore it apart 10 years ago. Perhaps worse. I hope to dedicate a couple weeks this winter to tighten it up for good with a new set of gaskets for the whole engine. Can this be done without pulling the pistons and or doing anything to the transmission? Can I unbolt the connecting rods and pull the jug to replace the gasket under the jug? Is there any other parts I should change when I have it apart? Like con rod bearings or a different cam chain tensioner?

where exactly is it leaking ? pic's ?
did you try re-torqueing the head bolts in the proper sequence of your FSM to see if it stops or slows down the leak ?

It isn't a big job to strip and rebuild the entire motor.
The actually strip and reassembly time for a clean motor with the correct tools (without doing things like a valve job etc) can be done in a day if you are experienced.
You can replace all the bottom end gaskets without splitting the cases .
The case halves are sealed with RTV (no gasket).
You cannot unbolt the con rods as the crank is a pressed up roller bearing item like a 2 stroke.
You will have to pull the head and block to renew the head and base gaskets.
Depending on mileage you may have to renew the cam chain and guides .

Then you should know the engine has to come out and or the head has to come off with the barrels to replace the base gasket.
