do these plugs look ok? was created by kayodash
Hello, so after some carburetor work on my 84 kz550. I'm double checking my work. And am wondering if I'm a little lean. Bike runs pretty decent and I don't think I hear the carbs popping on deceleration. Starts with choke and has to warm up and play with idle a little to be able to take choke off. After warming up it can idle at 1000rpm to 1300rpm no problem. Acceleration seems pretty smooth. Doesn't seem to jerk at all like its out of gas. Doesn't seem to miss while I'm cruising either. Only reason I think it may be lean is because of the plugs, they are new with less than 100 miles. I attached some pictures. They don't look glazed like I've seen online but Someone please let me know what their opinion on the plugs are.

Look pretty good to me but your main jetting is harder to read compared to 1/8 to less the half throttle which is probably +90% of your riding.
You need to ride it WOT and do a chop, pull off the side of the road and look again.

What do you mean "do a chop"?

Turn the bike off at full throttle. This will give you the reading.

I'd go to NGK plugs. They are made for the bike. The heat ranges vary between makes.

K ill get some NGKs , and as for killing it at WOT can this be done in my driveway after the bike is warm? Or does it need the load on the engine?

Well, if you have a particularly long driveway or a particularly slow bike...

WOT - Wide Open Throttle. Best to bring it out to an open road, put it in a higher gear and open the throttle. Use a little rear brake if you want to stop yourself from accelerating too fast or at all - then switch the bike off and pull over. That way, the spark plug is igniting the air/fuel mixture at WOT when switched off.

Don't even THINK about running that engine at WOT without a load. Doing that with the bike in neutral or with the clutch pulled in will damage the engine. Ed

Took her out this morning, hit the country road by my house. Went WOT
And man does that bike move. But killed it with the switch pulled over. Popped the plugs out and they looked pretty similar to the pictures I posted. Maybe just a slight smidgen lighter color, but it could've been the difference between the lighting. It was late afternoon yesterday and morning today. There's no delay in power. I noticed If I crack the throttle while idle it may or may not die. I'm guessing because I still haven't synced the carbs to the bike yet. But as for drivability and cruising I haven't noticed any real issues.

OK, for more power it looks like you could move up another one or two main jet #'s.
Most daily street riders are not really driving strong into the main jet, with the slide and needle pulled etc....

With the correct plugs you'll get better readings.
