Hello KZR's. I was doing routine maintenance today n my 1978 KZ 1000 and When I was putting the oil filer cover bolt back in I stripped the hole.
Does anyone know what size hole this is so I can get a tap to ream out the hole again? Or if anyone has any other ideas they would be appreciated.
Thanks for your help.

Contact www.z1enterprises.com as they probably know the size, and how to repair it.

Did you try to run the bolt in without the cover, filter and spring?

@ Mfolks,...yes. I will contact Z1 if no one on this forum has experienced this problem. Even though it was very stupid of me I am thinking someone else has done this.

@ Zwest,...yes I tried to run it thru and got a bolt from another motor and tried it. The bolt is going in crooked.

Any help would be appreciated

The outside threads measure 19.54 mm so I am thinking this is a 19mm bolt. so 19 x 1 tap is what i need.

If you have a extra bolt you might try making a thread chaser out of it. I did that with a spark plug that wouldn't go in. I ground two slices in it and ran it in back and forth little by little until snug. Normally only the first few threads get munged up.

@swest, ,,that was a good idea. Since the new bolt did not work I went back to the old bolt and made a thread chaser as you recommended. But I did it a little differently. I got a file and filed down the first couple of rows of threads and then when I put the bolt back in,...it was in the hole enough that it did not allow it to cock sideways and stayed straight in as it caught good threads.

What a dumb mistake for a couple of reasons. I did not take the pipe off and when the drain bolt came around it cocked the bolt as it went in. And second since I did not want to lay on the ground I reached under there and went right to the socket instead of starting the threads by hand. .

Well,...got lucky. Crisis avoided for today. The bike will be ready to ride this weekend with new Shell Rotella.

Thanks for the inputs.
