compression test on an '82 kz1000 was created by JoyceD
We have an '82 KZ1000 that my husband wants needs to do a compression test on. However, we don't know what psi it should test to. We're ordering a book on it, but he'd like to know today, if anyone knows, because he may need to order parts tomorrow so they will be in when we get back home. (We both drive truck over the road.)

Here's what the KZ1000 Kawasaki Service Manual shows. Be SURE to follow the instructions carefully, otherwise the compression readings will not be accurate. Ed

Better check the valve clearance before performing a compression check. If the clearance is gone and the valves are being held open your compression will be low.
Oh and if the bike has sat for a long time the compression will often be low because the rings get sticky. Perform a good old Italian Tune up and check the compression in a few hundred miles.

Wow! Thanks! 188psi, and two of the cylinders were at 92 &95 psi, and another was at 65! No wonder the Harley passes it lately! Robert says that is our winter project this year. I get to learn how to rebuild my KZ! Woohoo!
On the down side, my riding is over for the season.

Do your valve adjustments and they may come back up. The weathers is turning already there? Pics?

It's been cool the last couple of days. We both go back out in the trucks today, so we won't get much more riding in. I have to be back in two weeks, but Rob might stay out longer. North Dakota gets cold earlier than a lot of places. We're talking about looking for a snowmobile for winter riding up here.

I think it will end abruptly here too.... we've already had many nights in the mid-high 40's!!!
Those 30-45 degree temp swings in 24 hours are a bad sign for us in the Rockies....

Yeah, those temp swings are definitely summer winding down.
I'm glad Robert decided to make this our winter project instead of doing it himself next time we get home. I want to learn how to do this.
