Anybody know of a way to get the dynamo rotor off without the special tool/ puller ? I'm working with a 76 kz400 d model

I don't know about the 400 but the steering head bolt fits and with a ball bearing it will drive it off. I have a old one I use now.

For the bigger fours I used a CB750 rear wheel spindle before I got the tool, it is just a metric bolt thread if you can find one of the right size.

Now do I really need to take this thing off to split the cases?

Alternator rotor is removed to replace crank oil seal. Get a manual.

I have a manual and It told me to use the tool I was just seeing If I really need the tool and If it was actually necessary to remove this to split the cases. I mean the manual sais it has to be removed so I guess Ill get the tool because my inexperienced self wont be able to figure out any other way to take this off lol

i started a thread the other day about this motor and the pistons being seized to the bores...finally got those unstuck and the cyclinder off but the motor is still locked up. This was a junk bike I bought for almost nothing so I figured I could tear the motor down in hopes to learn how it all works.

Good luck, just if the motor is badly stuffed just use it as a learning exercise, the cost of parts, boring, skimming and gaskets, oil seals etc soon makes a 'free' engine a lot more expensive then finding a decent running motor. You may need to remove the clutch centre nut, this is done mega tight and needs an air impact wrench...or a grinder if the motor is scrap :)
