It does need a gasket, but the gasket does not come with it. The gasket should be ordered separately. Here's the image from the APE website (

I replaced a buddies in his old Z1, once upon a time. After me carefully scraping off all the old gasket material, getting both surfaces down to clean metal and flat... and then told me he didn't have a gasket. :woohoo:
So, I used a thin bead of RTV Ultra Black.... I told him under no circumstances should he start the engine until late in the next day and to get a gasket in the next few days.
It never leaked and he said he never put a gasket back on.... that was 24 years ago and I saw the bike running a couple-three years ago.
However, don't be a red neck... get a gasket, I just did the same to mine Sunday and it's bone dry with no gasket sealer, just a gasket.

It would be nice if stuff like that came with gaskets, but to my knowledge whether they are genuine Kawasaki parts or aftermarket none of the motorcycle parts do. As an example, the first link below shows several different aftermarket covers. Some say they come with bolts, etc., but none say they come with gaskets:

When it comes to tensioners, at least kzzone.com makes it very clear about what is needed by putting the tensioner and gasket (as needed) in an easy to understand table:

I bought the gasket separately when I bought the manual tensioner.
if you are stuck for a gasket and dont want to wait then I imagine that would be a really simple one to cut yourself from a piece of gasket paper
