I think Patton has posted a good installation diagram somewhere.
The 750-4 manual doesn't specify exactly how to position the half-moon exhaust collars. Neither does the 81 650 manual --- its exhaust system is identical to the 750 Ltd. I place the half-moons perpendicular to the exhaust studs, with the gap between them evenly spaced & with the gap half-way between the studs; I just checked the 81-82 KZ1000 factory manual --- it specifies installing the half-moons the same way with the gap between the studs.

Put the exhaust system in place with the bolts, nuts & clamps finger tight (but I fasten the muffler brackets securely to the mufflers). Install the half-moons evenly & tighten the exhaust holder nuts evenly. Then tighten the remaining bolts n stuff.

I also use a piece of masking tape to hold the half moons together while installing, the tape will burn off right away
Also you should always use new exhaust gaskets

After all these years, I've never put anything on them to keep them in place. Didn't think about tape. I will next time. B) PITA

I've owned my KZ650-C1 since it was new and the exhaust system has never been removed, so I took a look just now to see how they were originally installed at the factory. They are all oriented with one half moon on top and one on the bottom, so the gaps are at 9:00 and 3:00. I can't say if that was just the way the assembler who did my bike liked to do them or if it was the way the assemblers were taught. Ed

I have used a tiny drop of grease on them to hold in place and then it just burns off.
