kz1000J3 broken camchaft cap was created by Oskari72
Hi

I hate to admit that I really broke one of the camchaft caps when putting it on. I quess those are machined with the cylinder head and now I need the whole thing. Please tell me what year models have the same cylinder head.!!

HELP...

Show a picture of the cap. Depending on how it's broken it may not matter much at all. Ed

There was another one here a few months ago. It was glued together. BAD IDEA. It should have been welded. They are a matched set to the head. You could get another one, take it to a machine shop and have it fitted or have the one you have welded and put it on.

If you find a replacement it will need to be line bored to the head before you try and use it

Yup, years ago I had too many 550 engines in bits, some cam caps got mixed between a couple of heads. as they are numbered, by removing the valves and putting one cap on at a time I could feel the difference. Not ideal, now I dot punch mark them .

Rebuilding my 67 Pontiac Le Mans 326 motor, I had a guy washing parts for me. I told him not to mix up the rod bearing caps. He did. I sent him home. I wanted to murder him! Putting it together I had to go with the witness marks from when they were machined. Fired it up, nice and smooth, then it slowed down and froze. I was so disgusted, that car sat for ten years until I scrapped it. Wish I would have kept it. :pinch:

When I was wrenching on bikes, I'd get machines that some expert had worked on. I'd take it in depending on how bad it was. Sometimes I'd send them away.

I guess I went a little off topic. What is the decision on the cam cap?

I'm not sure about KZ's but with Suzuki GS's, which also have line bored cam caps, you can replace lost/damaged caps with another one without issue (typically). I'd try a new cap before scrapping the head. It might help to have a couple to choose from.
